I’m writing this article as I noticed that many of my foreign clients are unaware about something called “Tax Refund” and so I want to share this important information with all of you.
If you are a non European Union resident spending at least € 154,94 in any New Tax Free affiliated store, you are entitled to a refund of sales tax (VAT) included in the price of the goods you purchase.
Ask at the store’s register for a new Tax Free form.
Standard VAT Rate 22%
- Fashion, textiles, leatherwear, jewellery, glassware, sunglasses, wines and other alcohol: 22%
- Food (meat and other food items): 10%
- Herbs (basil, oregano and sage): 5%
- Milk, vegetables and fruit and bread and prescription glasses: 4%C
The Italian Tax Free Form is valid for 3 months from the issuing month.
New rules for shopping in Italy
Don’t forget your passport next time you shop in Italy. New rules for the digital tax free system means that you must present your passport, or a scanned copy, in-store when purchasing the goods.

Validity of stamped Form: Issuing month + 3 months.
Receipts can be accumulated to reach the minimum amount if the purchases were made on the same day and in the same store.
I usually recommend my clients to complete their tax refund request while they’re shopping and not at the airport (so you don’t have to stay in line even for this) as there are many tax refund offices that you can easily found here
